About Barbados
Barbados is a Caribbean Island in the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Venezuela. Barbados offers sun, exciting history and a large variety of culture, making Barbados a gem of the Caribbean. Barbados is 21 miles long and 14 miles wide and is the only coral island in the region with all white sand beaches. Visitors tend to regard the friendliness of Barbadian's as its greatest asset. Barbados weather is great for most of the year.
Barbados beaches consist of finely ground coral forming a fine grain. Natural sand dunes are not common on Barbados beaches but some do exist in Long Bay on the South West Coast of the island. Barbados is a mainly flat island with a large number of gradually sloping beaches. Predominantly in the North, coral and sandstone cliffs reach the height of several hundred feet. On the flatter West coasts, you may walk for miles across long white sandy beaches.
There are plenty of fine Barbados restaurants on the island that offer local cuisine, fresh seafood dishes and also International cuisine. You can look over the turquoise Caribbean Sea at some of these restaurants.
Barbados is great for tax-free shopping, with prices 30 to 50% less than in North America and Europe. When making tax-free purchases ensure that you have your passport or cruise ticket with you. Your packages can then also be delivered to the port for your convenience. Broad Street in Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados, is the best place to shop in Barbados. Here there are large department stores and duty free shops.
Barbados Attractions
When you stop over at Barbados, be sure to visit Barbados' top attraction, Harrison's Cave. The Caves are located near the geographical centre of Barbados, in St. Thomas. They are a natural phenomenon offering a unique experience. First noted in historical papers in 1795, the caves were virtually forgotten for nearly two hundred years until two men "rediscovered" them in 1976. Harrison's Cave was formally opened to the public in 1981 as a "show" cave, giving people an opportunity to view an assortment of natural features that are unique to Barbados' geophysical structure.
Morgan Lewis is one of the two remaining sugar mills in the Caribbean. Restored and maintained by the Barbados National Trust, the Barbados sugar mill includes a display of the equipment used to manufacture sugar when the sugar production industry was run by wind power generated from such mills.
