About St Lucia
St. Lucia is located in the middle of the Eastern Caribbean islands and is situated south of Martinique and northwest of Barbados. The capital of St. Lucia is Castries and it is on the north-west side of the island. St. Lucia is a tropical jewel that is still comparatively unknown.
One manifestation of St. Lucia's rich cultural heritage is its cuisine. The island is one of the principal banana exporters in the Caribbean and produces six different varieties. Other tropical fruits produced in St. Lucia include mangoes, papayas, coconuts, pineapples, passion fruit and guavas. Chefs combine the island's fresh produce with fresh seafood to create tasty curries. The national dish is Callaloo soup, made from a green vegetable similar to spinach.
St Lucia Attractions
Castries, St. Lucia's capital, hosts many of St. Lucia's historical sights such as the La Toc Battery, and magnificent architecture, including the Castries Cathedral. Castries is a great place to shop, you can visit the town market and watch the art of silk screening.
Overlooking Castries, Morne Fortune, the Hill of Good Luck, was a key battleground during the time of conflict over colonial possession of St. Lucia. Marigot Bay was also a wartime base but is now a sanctuary for yachts and one of St. Lucia's most attractive spots.
The tiny fishing villages of Anse-le-Ray & Canaries are worth a visit to see one of the island's key traditions, fishing in dug-out canoes.
Pigeon Island is a stunning nature park that reflects many years of history and is connected to St. Lucia's west coast. Several historical sites are marked, such as the relics of an 18th-century British fort. The island also has two isolated beaches and is the main venue of St. Lucia's annual Jazz Festival.
The Pigeon Island Museum & Interpretive Centre exhibits the history of St. Lucia. By looking at ancient artefacts and watching and listening to audi-visual aids, you will learn about the settlers and the island's role in the battles during colonisation.
Marquis Estate is St. Lucia's largest estate, situated just outside of the capital Castries. This is a working plantation offering insights into the production of banana crops and coffee and cocoa as well.
Sulphur Springs Park in Soufrière is a must-see attraction. The last volcanic eruption was over three hundred years ago but to this day this volcanic pit continues to emit sulfur into the air and heat pools of water above boiling point.
