Malta Cruises
A cruise to Malta is special for two reasons. The first is, of course, the experience of the sailing in the Mediterranean itself. Some have called it the most romantic and most historical sea in the world that has helped spread the civilisation of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, the armies of the great Roman empire and transported the Moors into the heart of Spain, changing it forever. The second reason is that the Maltese Islands are famous for its stunning coastlines beaches of red sands, golden sands and blue lagoons.
About Malta
The Maltese islands are situated in the Mediterranean, just southeast of Italy. There are 7 islands in total, the largest of which are Malta, Gozo and Comino.
Malta's history goes back to the 9th century BCE, when Phoenician traders first settled these islands. Over the centuries, it was inhabited by the Romans, Arabs from north Africa and the Spanish (who granted it as a fiefdom to the Order of St John of Jerusalem). Napoleon eventually occupied it briefly and then it became part of the British Empire before it finally became independence in 1964.
Malta Attractions
The clear blue waters of the Blue Lagoon are one of the highlights of any visit to Comino. This is perfect for those who like swimming, snorkeling and diving. This island is only about 3 square kilometers and has only a handful of residents.
Bugibba and St Julians are the tourist resorts of Malta, characterized by hotels and guesthouses. By day you can spend your day sunbathing and swimming and sitting on the lively promenades. By night, they both come alive with clubs, music and a host of entertainment. St Julians also offers a casino and late night shopping.
Valletta is the capital of Malta. Here you can experience the older Malta with its 16th century walled city. One of the attractions of Valletta is the public gardens where you can get an amazing view of the Grand Harbour.
Gozo is famous for the Place of Giants (Ggantiija) the Neolithic temple, built with massive stones and dating back to 3600 BCE. Here you will also find Calypso's Cave, described in Homer's Odyssey.
The walled city of Mdina, the old capital of Malta, is a typical mediaeval town with impressive Norman and Baroque architecture. It is also known as the "Silent City". Despite being fully inhabited, this city is soundless.
