Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway, a municipality, and a former county, in the county of Hordaland. The Norwegian city of Bergen was separated from Hordaland as a county of its own in 1831. It was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The rural municipality of Bergen landdistrikt was merged with Bergen January 1, 1877. The rural municipality of Årstad was merged with Bergen July 1, 1915. The rural municipalities of Arna, Fana, Laksevåg and Åsane were merged with Bergen January 1, 1972. The city lost its status as a separate county the same date. Bergen was Norway's biggest city until the 1830s, when it was passed by Oslo. The city is located on the south-western coast of Norway, in the county of Hordaland, with its centre situated between a group of mountains known collectively as de syv fjell ("the seven mountains"), although the number of mountains is a matter of definition. Bergen is host to part of the country's large oil industry, as well as deep sea operations. Its harbours are used by everything from small pleasure vessels to cruise ships and cargo vessels, and is the base of many of the country's fishing vessels. Bergen is an important cultural centre in its region and was one of nine European cities honoured with the title European City of Culture in 2000.

Ålesund was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Borgund was merged with Ålesund January 1, 1968. Sula was separated from Ålesund January 1, 1977. Ålesund received city rights in 1848. It is the administrative center as well as the principal shipping city of the Sunnmøre district. The Ålesund agglomeration has a population of 45.299.
Molde

Molde is a city and municipality in the county of Møre og Romsdal, Norway. An old settlement emerging as a trading post in the late Middle Ages. Formal trading rights were introduced in 1614, and the city was incorporated through a royal charter in 1742. Molde was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see here), and Bolsøy and parts of Veøy were merged with Molde on January 1, 1964. The city is the administrative center of Møre og Romsdal, the commercial hub of Romsdal, and the host of the bishop of Møre. Molde continued to grow throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries, becoming a center for Norwegian textile and garment industry, as well as the administrative center for the region, and a major tourist destination. After World War II, Molde has experienced a tremendous growth, becoming a center for not only administrative and public services, but also academic resources and industrial output. The city is located on the northern shore of the Romsdalsfjord on the Romsdal Peninsula. Molde has a maritime, temperate climate, with cool-to-warm summers, and relatively mild winters.
Kristiansand

Kristiansand is a city and municipality, and the capital of the county of Vest-Agder, Norway. Kristiansand was founded by King Christian IV in 1641. It was created as a market town to encourage growth in this area of strategic significance, providing a local economic base for construction of fortifications and population for defense of the area. The centre of Kristiansand is called Kvadraturen due to its square gridline of streets. The zoological garden, Kristiansand Dyrepark (Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park) just east of the city, has a wide selection of animals in, for the most part, natural habitats. This includes animals such as wolves, tigers and the lynx. Due to the allocation of areas the combination of zoo and recreational park turns out surprisingly well. Each year in July, Kristiansand is the site of the Quart Festival, a multi-day music festival - the largest of its kind in Norway

Trondheim is a city and municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. Although the region had been inhabited for thousands of years, the city of Trondheim was founded in 997. It was frequently used as the seat of the king, and was capital of Norway until 1217. In the Middle Ages, Trondheim was the site of several battles, including the battle between King Sverre and Erling Skakke, in 1179. The city has experienced several major fires – the most devastating in 1651 and 1681. The 1651 fire destroyed 90% of the buildings in Trondheim, and the 1681 fire led to a total reconstruction of the city.

Bodø, located just north of the Arctic Circle, is the largest city in Nordland, and the second largest in North Norway.

Stamsund has a rich cultural life with two free theatre groups, Nordland puppet theatre, and many artists. The acclaimed Hurtigruten Coastal Express service makes a regular stop at the Stamsund dock, southbound from Svolvær and northbound from Bodø.

Tromsø is a city and municipality in the county of Troms, Norway. The area has been inhabited since the end of the ice age, and the Sámi culture is the first known culture of the region. Norwegian culture had reached the area around 800 CE, when sources tell of Ohthere's viking settlement somewhere south of today's Tromsø. The first church on the island of Tromsøya was erected in the 13th century, and the area one of Denmark-Norway's very northernmost territories not contested by Russia. During the 1600s, Denmark-Norway solidified its claim to the northern coast of Scandinavia and during this period a redoubt, Skansen, was built. Tromsø was issued its city charter in 1794 by King Christian VII. Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the small island of Tromsøya in the county of Troms, 350 km (217 mi) inside the arctic circle. The island is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream, with an average January temperature of -4 °C, but it's still quite cool in the summer, with a 24-hour average of 12 °C in July. The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in North Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. The city is a cultural centre for its region, several festivals taking place in the summer. The largest football team in the city, Tromsø I.L, plays in the Norwegian Premier League.

Hammerfest is a city and municipality in the county of Finnmark, Norway. The municipality encompasses parts of three islands; Kvaløya, Sørøya and Seiland. Hammerfest was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The law required that all cities should be separated from their rural districts, but because of low population, and very few voters, this was impossible to carry out for Hammerfest in 1838. Norsk Hydro has built av vindmill park on the island, which has become a landmark for people at sea. The 15 windmills are located at Gavlen, where the viewpoint and cafe Arctic view provides a undisturbed view towards the Barents Sea and to the surrounding arctic archipelago. Havøysund is also a stop on Hurtigruten, between Hammerfest and Honningsvåg.
Honningsvag

Honningsvåg claims to be the northernmost city in Norway and even in the world. It is situated at a bay on the southern side of Magerøya island, while the famous North Cape and its visitors center is on the northern side. It is a port of call for cruise ships, especially in the summer months. Honningsvåg Airport is located 4 km outside the town. People have lived in this area as far back as 10,300 years ago. The sea was probably the main food supplier for this prehistoric settlement. Indeed, the ice-free ocean (southwestern part of the Barents Sea) provides rich fisheries even today, and tourism is also important. And, due to the proximity of the temperate sea water, winter temperatures in Honningsvåg are much milder than one would expect at this latitude (January 24-hr average is -4°C). Honningsvåg is known to be a city with a happy social environment, especially in the summertime when almost 500 other Nordic people come from other places to work in Honningsvåg within the tourist industry.

The Norwegian Coast Guard has its northern base in this town (Kystvaktskvadron Nord).

Brønnøysund (help•info) is a town and former municipality, and centre of Brønnøy municipality, Nordland county, Norway. Brønnøysund was separated from Brønnøy as a town (ladested), and municipality of its own, in 1923. It was again merged with Brønnøy January 1, 1964 - and it then lost its status as a town. Today it has approximately 5,000 inhabitants, and it is the administrative and commercial centre of the municipality of Brønnøy. A new township was declared in 2000. Brønnøysund has daily visits by the Hurtigruten (Coastal Express), northbound at night and southbound in the afternoon. It has its own airport, Brønnøysund Airport, Brønnøy, and a direct eastbound connection to the E6 highway. Throughout Norway the town is known as the location of the Brønnøysund Register Centre. Creditinform and Dun & Bradstreet are the main commercial spin-offs of this register, in which the new e-government portal Altinn is the newest addition. Torghatten Trafikkselskap has its headquarter in Brønnøysund.
