E - Your Questions Answered

Embarkation
If you embark at ground level, the gangway to the ship may be level or inclined, depending on the embarkation deck and/or the tide. Alternatively, you may be required to embark from an upper level of a terminal, using an airport-style loading bridge.

Engine Room
The engine room is off-limits to passengers and visits are not allowed. A technical information leaflet may be available or a behind-the-scenes video may be shown on your cabin television. For more specific information, contact the purser's office.

Entertainment
On larger ships, this is very varied and can include theatre shows, cabaret, comedians, illusionists, puppeteers, quiz nights, cinema - to name but a few. Whichever ship and cruise you choose, you'll find entertainment standards are usually very high.

Environmental Concerns
Cruise ships refine oil, treat human waste and incinerate garbage. Cruise lines have a unique interest in the marine environment and are not likely to damage it, as compared for instance with oil tankers, although spillage of any kind is regrettable.

Excursions
Try to request excursions early as many are limited in number. It is occasionally possible to pre-book excursions when you get your cruise tickets. On rare occasions, excursions may be cancelled if there are insufficient numbers.

Executive Chef
The executive chef plans menus, orders food, organizes staff & arranges meals. Sometimes guest chefs from restaurants ashore offer tastes of 'regional cuisine'. They may also purchase local produce in 'wayside' ports & incorporate them into the menu.
