M - Your Questions Answered

Maiden Voyage
A ship's first ever voyage - usually with celebratory events during the course of the cruise, which make this a very memorable holiday.

Mail
You can buy stamps & post letters on most ships - some use the postal privileges & stamps of their flag of registration; others buy local stamps at ports of call. Mail is usually taken ashore by the ship's port agent just before the ship sails.

Manifest
This is a list of the ship's passengers, crew and cargo. Held at the purser's office, it is sometimes displayed on a notice board for passengers to view out of interest.

Marriage
A ship's captain can perform a marriage at sea, although this is a rare practice. You'd need to enquire whether such a marriage is legal back home; find out about paperwork, blood tests etc. For Wedding Anniversary celebrations-see SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

Massage
Make any appointments for the massage parlour as soon after embarkation as possible, in order to obtain the time and day of your choice.

Meals
Cruises serve all kinds of food. Many have theme nights, so you can be eating Italian one night, the next Oriental or . Vegetarian dishes are always available. Special dietary requirements can generally be met with advance notice.

Medical Service
Except for those registered in England or Norway, there are no mandatory requirements for cruise lines to carry a licensed physician. In general, ships carrying over 50 passengers have hospital facilities & at least one doctor. See DOCTOR/HEALTH.

Medication
It is necessary to declare any medication that you are taking before travel. This will enable the ship's medical crew to treat you accordingly should the need arise. Please also ensure that you take sufficient supplies of your medication with you.

Money Matters
Most cruise ships operate primarily in US dollars but some operate in other currencies, predominantly UK Sterling. Major credit cards and travellers' cheques are accepted on board (few take personal cheques). See CASHLESS CRUISING.

Movies
Some cruise ships have a movie theatre. The movies shown are recent releases. Some of the recently built or modified ships have replaced or supplemented the ship's movie theatre with television sets and video players in each cabin.

Music
The majority of cruises have several lounges where live music is played each evening and at varying times throughout the day. Jazz, disco, rock and easy listening are usually all available.
