S - Your Questions Answered

Safety Aboard
Passenger safety is a high priority for all cruise lines. Crew members must attend frequent emergency drills, the lifeboat equipment is regularly tested, and the fire-detecting devices, alarm, and fire-fighting systems are checked throughout the ship.

Sailing Time
In each port of call, the ship's sailing and all-aboard times will be posted at the gangway where you leave. The all-aboard time is usually half an hour before sailing - ships will not wait for delayed passengers, except in exceptional circumstances.

Sauna
Most ships have saunas which are usually compact and occasionally unisex. In some cases there will be a small charge for use, especially when combined with a massage.

Seasickness
Due to the stability of modern cruise ships, seasickness is rare even in rough weather - less than 3% of all passengers become seasick. Seasickness pills are available free on board. Alternatively a visit to the ship's doctor will sort out any discomfort.

Security(Boarding)
A personal boarding pass is issued when embarking (latest hi-tech passes contain your photo). You'll also be asked for a sep- arate piece of ID such as a driver's licence every time you board. If you misplace or lose the pass, contact the purser's office.

Security(Cabin)
Every cabin is provided with a key/keycard & should be kept locked at all times. Cruise lines do not accept responsibility for any money or valuables left in cabins & suggest you store them in a safety deposit box at the purser's office or in your cabin.

Shipboard Etiquette (General)
In public rooms, smoking & non-smoking sections are available - cigar & pipe smoking are not permitted in the dining room. If you have a video camera, entertainment shows & cabaret must not be recorded due to international copyright regulations.

Shipboard Etiquette(Dining)
You can be casual when on holiday, but should not enter the dining room in a bathing suit or with bare feet. Please take note of any "do's and don'ts" when on board.

Shopping
Before arriving at each port the cruise director will hold a port briefing. They will highlight the special bargains of each area, what to look for and to avoid. You can also shop for souvenirs at the onboard shops.

Smoking
All Cruise ships have non-smoking and smoking areas. Smoking is generally prohibited in the dining room, main sections of the theatres and public areas. Some ships designate certain lounges as non-smoking and others as smoking.

Sports
Most ships offer a variety of different sports. Some of the larger ships have a basketball court, tennis courts and even a running track. Most of the new ships also have a gym and spa.

Sports Facilities
Sport facilities vary depending on the size of the ship but they can include badminton, basketball, golf driving range, jogging track, miniature putting green, table tennis and volleyball. Check the daily programme for time and events.

Stabilizers
Nowadays all ships have stabilizers, i.e. retractable fins extending from both sides of the ship below the waterline to provide a more stable ride.

Starboard
The right-hand side of the ship when facing forward.

Stern
The aft most part of the ship that is opposite to the bow.

Sun
If your cruise takes you to the sun, remember that the closer you get to the Equator, the more potent and penetrating are the rays. They are most harmful from 12noon to 2pm when the sun is directly overhead.

Swimming Pools
The ship will have either an indoor or outdoor pool, or both. They may be closed while at port owing to local health and safety regulations and/or cleaning. Pools are shallow, so no diving is allowed. Opening hours will be listed on the daily programme.

Single Seating Dining
If there is only one sitting for dinner, most restaurant will be flexible in their dining times. Some ships will offer an early or a late dinner time. Please check with your cruiseline about their specific policy.
